The Evolution of Multidimensional Modeling

Tesser's roots go back more than four decades, to a generation of innovative software that challenged the way people built financial models and analyzed complex business data.

The journey began with Javelin in the mid-1980s and continued through Lotus Improv, Quantrix, and ultimately Tesser. Along the way, the technology evolved from character-based desktop software to graphical applications— and finally to a cloud platform built specifically for multidimensional modeling and analytics.

From Javelin to Tesser

Four decades of innovation in multidimensional modeling

  • Javelin
The first generation of metadata-driven financial modeling software emerges, introducing ideas that would influence multidimensional modeling for decades.

  • Lotus Improv
Lotus brings multidimensional modeling to a graphical, spreadsheet-like interface, making powerful modeling concepts far more accessible.

  • Quantrix
Lighthouse Design creates a new Improv-inspired modeling application for the NeXT platform, continuing the evolution of multidimensional modeling.

  • Lighthouse Design acquired
Sun Microsystems acquires Lighthouse Design, and the productivity suite, including Quantrix, is eventually shelved.

  • Quantrix returns
Peter Murray and Chris Houle rebuild Quantrix in Java, founded Quantrix the company, and released Quantrix 1.0 at the end of 2003.

  • Quantrix changes hands
Quantrix sells to ID Business Solutions, marking the end of this chapter of the product's development.

  • Tesser Consulting
Tesser, at the time CRH Enterprises, starts to offer consulting services around multi-dimensional modeling software, like Quantrix.

  • Tesser initiates research
Tesser initiates R&D project to explore a fundamentally new goal: bringing multidimensional modeling to the cloud.

  • First commercial subscription
Tesser begins to introduce early modeling application cloud platform to “early” adopter customers

  • Tesser goes software-first
Tesser transitions from a services-led company to a software-first business, with the Tesser multidimensional modeling and analytics platform at its center.

One idea. Four decades. Still evolving.

From character-based financial modeling to graphical desktop software and now cloud-native multidimensional analytics, the technology has continually evolved around one fundamental idea:

Make complex multidimensional data easier to model, understand, and use.

Four Decades. One Continuing Idea.

The technology has changed dramatically: from character-based interfaces to graphical applications, from desktop software to the cloud.

But the underlying idea has remained remarkably consistent:

Give people a better way to model, understand, and work with multidimensional data.

That is the idea that connects Javelin, Lotus Improv, Quantrix, and Tesser - and it continues to shape where Tesser goes next.
